Delta allows every passenger one carry-on bag and one personal item free of charge, making it one of the more straightforward US carriers for cabin baggage. Add a checked bag, a bicycle, or an overweight suitcase, and the rules branch quickly by cabin class, route, and ticket type. This guide covers carry-on dimensions and personal item sizing, checked bag fees on domestic and international routes, overweight and oversized charges, and the special rules that apply to sporting equipment like golf clubs and bicycles.
Delta Carry-On Allowance: Size, Weight & What Counts
Every Delta passenger, regardless of fare class, is entitled to one carry-on bag and one personal item in the cabin at no extra cost. The carry-on must fit in the overhead bin; the personal item must slide under the seat in front of you. First Class passengers receive the same cabin baggage entitlement - the premium difference shows up in checked baggage, not carry-on quantity.
The maximum dimensions for a carry-on are 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 35 x 23 cm), including handles and wheels. Delta does not typically enforce a weight limit for carry-on luggage, with two exceptions: flights departing from Beijing Capital International Airport and Shanghai Pudong International Airport have a 10 kg (22 lb) carry-on weight limit, and flights departing from Singapore Changi International Airport have a 7 kg (15 lb) limit.
Delta Personal Item Size Requirements
A Delta personal item must fit securely underneath the seat in front of you. Approved items include a purse, briefcase, small backpack, belt bag, fanny pack, camera bag, diaper bag, or laptop bag. Delta recommends keeping your personal item at 17 x 13 x 9 inches (43 x 33 x 23 cm) or smaller. The general underseat space on most Delta aircraft measures 20 x 15 x 11 inches (55 x 38 x 28 cm), so items near the recommended maximum should fit, though tighter aircraft configurations can vary.
The practical distinction between a personal item and a carry-on is simple: your carry-on goes overhead, your personal item goes under the seat. Basic Economy passengers should treat their personal item as their only cabin bag, since a full-size carry-on is not included in that fare.
On Delta Connection flights with 50 seats or fewer, overhead and underseat space is limited enough that only personal items are permitted onboard. Larger bags are gate-checked at no additional charge, but they travel in the hold rather than the cabin.
Carry-On Rules for Musical Instruments
Guitars and smaller instruments such as violins or flutes are accepted as a free carry-on on Delta and Delta Connection flights, provided they fit in the overhead bin or another approved cabin storage location based on space available at boarding. Delta's standard 22 x 14 x 9-inch carry-on size restriction does not apply to small musical instruments - the test is whether it physically fits, not whether it meets the standard bag dimensions.
If overhead space is limited or you'd prefer extra protection, a musical instrument can be checked at the gate. For instruments too fragile to be checked, you can purchase a full-price ticket so the instrument occupies its own seat. An instrument travelling in a seat must not exceed 165 lbs (75 kg) and must be secured with a seatbelt.
Delta Checked Baggage Allowance by Cabin Class
How many bags you can check for free - and how heavy they can be - depends primarily on the cabin class purchased. Business Class and premium cabin travellers receive meaningfully more generous allowances than Main Cabin or Basic Economy passengers. Federal Aviation Administration regulations govern what can be packed in checked luggage regardless of cabin, so hazardous materials rules apply universally.
Basic Economy Checked Baggage Policy
Basic Economy checked bags are $45 and must not exceed 50 lbs (23 kg) in weight or 62 linear inches (158 cm) in total dimensions. On most domestic and transatlantic routes, no free checked bag is included - fees apply from the first bag. One exception: International Basic Economy passengers travelling to Asia receive one free checked bag. If you're considering a Basic Economy fare for a transatlantic or domestic trip and plan to check a bag, factor the fee into your total cost before booking.
Main Cabin Checked Baggage Allowance
Main Cabin passengers face a 50 lb (23 kg) weight limit and a 62 linear inch size cap per checked bag. On most domestic routes, the first checked bag carries a fee - currently $35 when prepaid online. Many international Main Cabin tickets include one free checked bag depending on the route, though a second bag incurs an additional fee. If you're close to the bag limit, consolidating into one heavier bag (within the 50 lb limit) is usually more economical than paying for two.
Delta Comfort+ Baggage Benefits
On domestic routes, Delta Comfort+ passengers typically pay the same checked bag fees as Main Cabin travellers - the Comfort+ upgrade covers the seat experience rather than baggage. International Delta Comfort+ passengers usually receive one free checked bag with their fare.
Eligible co-branded Delta SkyMiles American Express Card members receive their first checked bag free, and this benefit extends to the primary cardholder and up to eight companions travelling on the same Delta-operated flight reservation. It does not apply on partner-operated flights, so check the operating carrier before assuming it will apply. This catches many travellers out when booking codeshare itineraries.
Premium Select, Business Class, First Class & Delta One
Passengers in First Class, Business Class, and Delta One receive two free checked bags, each weighing up to 70 lbs (32 kg), compared to the 50 lb limit in Main Cabin. A Medallion Member travelling in Delta One or Delta First can check up to three bags free at 70 lbs per bag, making these fares practical for longer trips or travel with equipment. Delta Premium Select passengers also receive two free checked bags at the standard premium weight limit.
Delta Baggage Fees: Domestic vs. International Routes
Baggage fees vary considerably depending on whether you're flying domestically, to Canada or Mexico, across the Atlantic, or to Asia or South America. Routes to Puerto Rico, Central America, and North Africa each carry their own fee schedules, as do South Africa and the United Arab Emirates. One principle applies across all routes: if a bag triggers multiple fee categories - for example, it's an extra bag that is also overweight and oversized - separate fees apply for each violation.
Domestic Baggage Fees Within the U.S.
Premium cabin passengers and Delta Medallion elite members have a 70 lb (32 kg) limit on domestic routes. Overweight fees on domestic flights are structured by weight tier:
|

|
51-70 lbs (23-31.75 kg) |
$100 |
|
71-99 lbs (32-45 kg) |

International Baggage Fees by Route
Many international Economy and Main Cabin tickets include one free checked bag, but the second bag and beyond carry fees that vary by region. For travel between the United States and Canada, Mexico, or Central America (including El Salvador and Panama), the second checked bag fee is $55 USD.
For routes to Europe and North Africa, Basic Economy passengers pay $60 for the first checked bag and $100 for the second. Overweight fees on international flights mirror the domestic structure: $100 USD/CAD for bags between 51-70 lbs and $200 USD/CAD for bags between 71-100 lbs. On flights to, from, or through Europe, South Africa, or the United Arab Emirates, bags exceeding 70 lbs (31.75 kg) are not accepted at all - there is no fee option for heavier bags on those routes.
Overweight, Oversized & Excess Baggage Fees
Beyond the standard per-bag fees, Delta applies additional charges when bags exceed weight or size thresholds, or when you check more bags than your allowance permits. Understanding these fees before you pack is the most reliable way to avoid an expensive surprise at check-in.
Overweight Bag Fees and Weight Limits
On domestic flights, overweight fees are $100 for bags between 51-70 lbs and $200 for bags between 71-99 lbs, with bags at 100 lbs or more refused entirely. For flights between North, South, or Central America and Europe or North Africa - and for any flight to, from, or through Europe, South Africa, or the United Arab Emirates - bags exceeding 70 lbs (31.75 kg) are not accepted, regardless of fee payment.
Oversized and Bulky Bag Charges
Any checked bag exceeding 62 linear inches in combined length, width, and height is considered oversized. Fees and acceptance vary by size:

Fees for Extra Checked Bags Beyond Your Allowance
Delta allows up to 10 bags per passenger on flights operated by Delta or Delta Shuttle. On Delta Connection flights, the maximum is four bags per passenger, accepted on a space-available basis. Delta may also limit excess baggage when doing so would prevent the airline from accommodating two bags per passenger for other travellers.
For domestic flights, bags four through ten cost $200 each. On flights between North, South, or Central America and Europe or North Africa, the third through tenth bags cost $285 each. If you're travelling with a large volume of luggage, shipping items ahead independently is often more cost-effective than paying per-bag excess fees.
Special Items: Sporting Equipment, Golf Clubs & Bicycles
Delta eliminated its $150 specialty sports bag fee in July 2019, a significant change for travellers carrying surfboards, bicycles, golf clubs, and scuba gear. Sporting equipment is now subject to standard checked baggage fees based on cabin class, travel region, and the total number of bags checked. Most sporting equipment will not be accepted if it exceeds 115 linear inches (292 cm) or weighs 100 lbs (45.36 kg) or more.
Bicycles are not subject to oversized fees and travel at the standard checked bag rate, provided they weigh 50 lbs (23 kg) or less. Bicycles over 50 lbs incur the applicable excess weight fee. One golf bag per passenger may be checked as a standard item, provided it is safely contained and meets size requirements.
Sporting Equipment Packaging and Fee Rules
All sports equipment must be packed in a durable protective container designed for that type of equipment. Bicycles packed in a soft-sided travel bag rather than a hard-shell case require a signed limited liability release form, and Delta accepts no responsibility for damage resulting from that packaging choice. Delta is also not liable for damage caused by over-packing any bag.
Camping equipment containing fuel or fuel residue, including butane or propane canisters, is not permitted in checked baggage. Scuba equipment with compressed gas cylinders is accepted, but the regulator valve must be completely disconnected before check-in.
Golf Clubs, Skis and Other Recreational Gear
Delta accepts common recreational equipment at standard checked bag rates, subject to specific quantity and dimension restrictions:
